Mexico has been rocked by two earthquakes in the past two weeks, and New York City residents with ties to the country are looking for ways to help.
Residents gathered Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Bronx to pray for quake victims and ask how they can help.
Jairo Guzman, president of the Mexican Coalition, says his family in Puebla and Atlixco, Mexico are OK, but he has received many calls from people who have not been in touch with their loved ones. He's been in touch with church leaders in Mexico and says that, along with money and food, people there desperately need simple day-to-day basics like toothpaste and soap.
The coalition is hoping to send money to Mexico to help with burial ceremonies. But Guzman says they are also focusing on the mental health of those in New York City dealing with the shock and emotion of losing friends or family members and not being able to travel home.
Guzman says support groups will be set up in about two weeks and will be held around the tri-state area. He stresses that although Mexico is part of the coalition's name, they are available to help all Latinos during their time of need.
