A longtime Unionport family business is learning about its nearly 80-year history as it completes the process of moving to a new location.
Varsity Army & Navy has had solid workwear, footwear and uniforms on Castle Hill Avenue since 1938, but the store has been cleared as it prepares to move up the block.
The move has been like an archaeological dig for the store owners, finding artifacts like measurements of children's height carved into wood, a pair of 66-inch overalls from the 1970s, a calendar from 1963 and shoe soles or rubber scraps below the floorboards.
As the company unpacks at its new location at 1239 Castle Hill Ave., Danny Siegel, whose father helped build the business into what it is today, vows to stay there for another 79 years.
"It's very emotional for me we've been here for so long, it's a part of me, this is my life here, but the next chapter is down the block," says Siegel.
