NYPD boosts security at Yankee Stadium after Vegas shooting

NEW YORK -

The NYPD is ramping up security at large events throughout the city following Sunday's mass shooting in Las Vegas, including at Yankee Stadium for Tuesday's wild-card game against the Minnesota Twins.

Police officials said they prepared an extensive security plan to ensure fans that they are safe at the game. There were observation teams at the stadium, as well as counter-sniper teams and K-9 units that featured bomb-sniffing dogs.

The NYPD said it is always vigilant but is taking a closer look at Yankee Stadium after the Vegas massacre. Police also said they need the help of the fans.

"If anyone sees anything that looks out of the ordinary...something that doesn't feel right, call 911 and flag out a cop because public safety is truly a shared responsibility," said NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill.

Police said there is no immediate threat to the city but that they are taking the extra precautions to be safe.

The NYPD's counterterrorism bureau said it has trained more than 57,000 civilians on what to do in the event of an active shooter situation. Officials said that will be important going into the holidays, which are accompanied by large events and parades.

The Sunday night shooting at a Las Vegas country music festival left at least 59 people dead and more than 500 wounded.
