Residents of a New York City Housing Authority complex in Soundview say they have complained for years about a river of sewage running underneath their homes.
Rolando Burgos lives in an end unit of the Clason Point Gardens and has a front-row seat to the sludge that pools up in a crawlspace.
"It comes into the house, it's really, really bad," he says. "The smell, it's been making everybody sick."
It's an issue residents say NYCHA is definitely aware of, as the agency regularly sends people to pump out the buildup.
State Assemblyman Marcos Crespo has allocated funding for permanently fixing the problem, but there's no timeline for when work will begin.
When News 12 contacted NYCHA on Thursday, it said it would send staff to clean the mess "immediately." And video from a resident shows that it did happen. But a photo from Monday taken by the same resident shows that the problem is already back.
NYCHA says that DASNY, or the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York, will make extensive repairs to the pipes to permanently resolve the issue. DASNY is an agency that provides financing and construction.
NYCHA adds that it will work with DASNY to develop a schedule to get residents the solution they need.
