A police academy with a twist is opening its doors in Brooklyn.
A few dozen officers were hand-picked for the borough's first "People's Police Academy," a new community training initiative that will teach the officers about the history and culture of the neighborhood in which they work but don't live.
The partnership between community leaders and the NYPD will feature lectures, field trips and tasting tours.
After three days of training, which include testimony from former gang members, the officers will head out into the community to put their lessons into practice.
The rollout is coming a few months after the academy opened in the Bronx to rave reviews.
