City Council candidates hold forum to discuss issues

Candidates running for City Council speaker talked about the city's most important issues at a public forum Tuesday night.
The event, titled The Justice Forum, was held at the National Action Network House of Justice in Harlem.
Some hot-button issues discussed at the meeting were the NYCHA lead paint controversy and police brutality.
Currently, Melissa Mark-Viverito holds the City Council speaker seat.
There are eight candidates in total and two from Brooklyn.
Council Member Robert Cornegy is a former professional basketball player who represents District 36 in Brooklyn, and 41-year-old Council Member Jumaane Williams represents the 45th District.
The City Council will elect its new speaker at its first meeting in January. The position requires a majority of votes, or at least 26 out of 51.
