The snow and cold temperatures didn't hold back surfers from catching some waves in Asbury Park Sunday.

The Cold War Surf Contest drew 18 brave surfers ready to hit the water in mid-December at Casino Beach.

Some participants flew in from as far as Hawaii to compete. The contest pits two teams of nine surfers against each other. The winner takes home a $1,000 prize.

Temperatures were in the 30s Sunday, but the water was a crisp 50 degrees. Special wetsuits were worn to keep the surfers warm and safe.

Surf conditions were considered ideal, with 3- to 5-foot waves.

"We get the best waves in the winter," says Rob Kelly, a surfer from Ocean City. "That's when we come out."

Organizers say the Cold War Surf Contest is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated events in the state.
