A recently constructed sign advertising a new slogan for the Town of Wallkill is getting some bad reviews for its location: a cemetery.
The new welcome sign in Wallkill says “Where happy babies are born,” but it’s located at the town-owned Bloomingburg Rural Cemetery.
News 12 asked town officials about the choice of where to put the sign, which was installed last week. Officials say the location was picked based on the fact that they had access to the property.
"It certainly wasn't done with any malfeasance to cause any strife or to make anyone upset,” said an official.
Some residents are offended by the sign and say it’s simply in poor taste.
Despite the complaints, Wallkill officials stand by their decision to build the $10,000 sign on cemetery property. They say it sits on the outskirts of the burial ground and that the purpose is to welcome people to town.
