Now’s the time to clear the snow and ice off the roof of your car or SUV if you haven’t – otherwise you could be hit with a fine.
Police are cracking down on drivers with those big dangerous mounds on their roofs following Thursday’s snowstorm. Officers from the Nassau Highway Patrol were out in force Friday pulling over drivers who hadn’t cleared their vehicles. Lucky motorists got off with a warning, and in some cases, help clearing their cars. They could have been ticketed nearly $300.
Police say excessive snow and ice not cleaned off vehicles can be very dangerous.

“It's illegal and it’s very unsafe and uncourteous to other motorists,” says Officer Thomas Greer.
Officer Greer says he's witnessed accidents because of flying snow and ice.

“Ice chunks, snow chunks … they could blind another driver, hit the windshield,” says Greer.
