Students and parents are fighting to keep Brooklyn Collegiate Preparatory High School open as it faces possible closure.
Earlier this month, families received a letter from the Department of Education informing them about the proposed closure of Brooklyn Collegiate at the end of the school year. There's also a proposal to close down the Eubie Blake School.
The DOE says Brooklyn Collegiate is part of the renewal school program, which means it is persistently underperforming and has therefore received additional attention and resources. But despite that help, education officials have determined the school hasn't turned itself around.
Parents and students attended a public hearing run by the superintendent Tuesday night, saying they believe the school needs to stay open.
"We have students that are doing excellent and are going to some of the prime colleges in the country," said PTA President Victor Adams. "The school should stay open, and the school will make New York City proud."
Many students and parents at the meeting told News 12 that they don't know what they're going to do if the school does in fact close.
A DOE spokesperson tells News 12 in a statement: "This closure was proposed in the best interest of students and the decision was made after a careful review of a variety of factors including graduation rate, attendance, classroom instruction, leadership and the school's overall trajectory. We value community feedback and will work individually with each family to ensure students have a seat at a higher-performing school next year."
