Icy roadways could make for dangerous driving conditions

CONNECTICUT -

Heavy rainfall, melting snow and freezing temperatures overnight are a recipe for dangerous driving conditions, state police say.

Three years ago, the area saw similar weather that resulted in icy conditions overnight. State police say street ice led to numerous car crashes on Interstate 95 on Jan. 18, 2015.

State Trooper Chris Scott tells News 12 that icy roadways are inevitable when water accumulates and temperatures drop.

Scott says the safest approach during such conditions is to turn on your hazard lights and slow down as much as possible, to as low as 2 mph if necessary, to maintain control.

Because there is also fog, Scott suggests remaining in the car if you get in an accident. He says that getting out of the vehicle creates a hazardous condition for other drivers.

“The safest thing to do is remain calm, and stay in your vehicle,” he says. “We will get to you.”

Scott advises drivers to be mindful of ice and to be sure to leave space between themselves and the drivers in front of them.
