Decatur Street residents call on DOT for speed bumps, safety signs
Residents who live on Decatur Street in Bed-Stuy are calling on the city's Department of Transportation to make their neighborhood safer.
The Decatur Street Block Association created an online petition to ask the Department of Transportation to install speed bumps and safety signs on Decatur Street between Malcolm X Boulevard and Patchen Avenue.  The petition currently has more than 100 signatures.
Marian Wright-Deseignora and her neighbors say they are worried for the children on the block.
"I've been on this block since I was about 8-years-old, and the cars come through here speeding all the time," she says. "At the height, you hear people get to the corner and have to screech on the brakes. So, they are absolutely in excess of the 25 mph speed limit."
A DOT spokesperson says they received their request last June and the location is scheduled for review. Safety enhancements are installed once criteria is met and the location is deemed feasible.
Members of the Decatur Street Block Association hope that by the time the weather is better and children are back outside and playing, that parents will no longer have to be as concerned.
