A man from Torrington has been charged in the death of a 15-month-old boy he was watching for his girlfriend.
The arrest comes after a lengthy investigation by multiple agencies.
Alex Ciccarelli-Rosa, 27, turned himself into police Thursday and appeared in court for the first time on a second-degree manslaughter charge, among others.
According to police, Ciccarelli-Rosa was intoxicated back on June 6 while the 15-month-old boy was under his care.
Police say he had been taking care of him for his girlfriend at her South Main Street home in Torrington.
The arrest warrant shows Ciccarelli-Rosa, a paramedic, had just gotten off a 12-hour shift and left his rum and coke unattended.
Police say he later found the baby drinking it, then tried to sober him up in the bathtub.
Ciccarelli-Rosa told them he left the baby unattended in the tub, then found him unresponsive.
The autopsy revealed the baby was submerged in the tub with blunt injuries to his head and acute alcohol intoxication.
"He engaged in reckless behavior in regards to the care, supervision and well-being of the child," says Lt. Bart Barown.
News 12 spoke with a neighbor following the baby's death.
She says the child's mother was at an end-of the-year celebration for her daughter's kindergarten class.
When she came home, she found her baby unresponsive in the tub.
Ciccarelli-Rosa's attorney says he has no criminal record, calling it a "tragic accident."
He's due back in court in two weeks.
