Bronx American Legion seeks funds for roof repairs

PELHAM BAY -

A group of Bronx veterans is fighting to repair their American Legion post.

American Legion Post 620 currently sits in disrepair, most notably with a ceiling that has been crumbling over the last five years.

Contractors say the problems all stem from the roof, which has three layers. All of the layers would need to be removed for the necessary repairs. That would come at an estimated cost of $25,000.

The cost would be a lot for the 77-member post made up of veterans who pay $40 in dues every year. So for now, some members have turned to temporary fixes.

Maintenance Commander Owen Mangan and other colleagues have constructed a barrier to keep plaster from crashing down into the lobby of the building.

But conditions in the building that has stood since 1948 have gotten worse, and members are pleading for help to make repairs.

"We do a lot of things with the community, for the community," says Mangan. "However anyone could help us out would be greatly appreciated."
