A group of teen girls from the tri-state area were treated to a day of dress shopping to help prepare them for a special prom event.
The Garden of Dreams Foundation brought 50 girls to PromGirl in Secaucus to look for their special gown. The girls all are facing a variety of obstacles, such as financial or social troubles or medical issues.
“I’m a three-time cancer survivor and I’ve overcome many obstacles in my lifetime,” says 14-year-old Caroline Sakovits. “This prom is a chance to have everyone who’s come over obstacles to come together and have a good time.”
The girls were able to pick out a dress as well as shoes and accessories for free as part of the program.
“It feels amazing to dress girls for this event in just a normal occasion but to give these girls an opportunity that wouldn't normally get it is just amazing to us,” says Kimberly Collins with PromGirl.
This is the fifth year of the event. The Garden of Dreams prom will be held in May at Madison Square Garden.
“We want to give them a night where there are no doctors, no parents, no chaperone, where they really just get to be kids and just go to prom,” says Garden of Dream’s Damaris Lewis.
The event is free for kids ages 14-18. Fifty boys will also be invited to the prom.
More information about the event can be found at the Garden of Dream website.
