#N12BX: Birth of the modern mall
The first modern shopping mall was opened on this day in the U.S. in 1954.
Northland Center shopping mall in Oakpark, Michigan suburb of Detroit played a critical role in the way modern malls are structured.
Since then,  malls have become a staple in American culture.  Seventy-five percent of all Americans visit a mall at least once every month, according to statistics.
In the Bronx, shoppers flock to the all at Bay Plaza, New York City's first enclosed shopping mall in 40 years. The mall features over 100 stores and restaurants and even has a health club.
In Brooklyn, the Atlantic Terminal mall has a loyal following.
But the most impressive of all malls has to be the Mall of America in Minnesota.  Seven Yankee stadiums can fit inside of it.
