Lazarus started the company about 70 years ago and stayed on as CEO until 1994. He no longer had any ownership position in the chain.
His death comes just a week after the company announced it'll be forced to shut down its U.S. operations. About 735 stores will be closing.
A liquidation sale started Thursday at most of the stores.
