THE BRONX -

A troubled Bronx intersection is getting a pedestrian island, officials say.

The safety improvements. at E. 138th Street and Park Avenue were announced by the Department of Transportation.

A new crosswalk will also be constructed between the west side of Park Avenue and E. 138th Street.

The improvements are part of a wider city plan to create safer streets for pedestrians and bicyclists.

According to the DOT, a span stretching from the 3rd Avenue Bridge to Madison Avenue saw 365 pedestrian-related injuries between 2010 and 2014.

At least 10 of the injuries were reported to be severe, officials say.

New traffic signals and protected bike lanes are also expected to be installed.
