NEW YORK -

March 27 is American Diabetes Association Alert Day.

The day is meant to remind people about the seriousness of the disease.

According to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, 650,000 adult New Yorkers reported having diabetes in 2011.

The Fordham section of the Bronx has 14.6 percent of its residents living with diabetes, while 14.4 percent of those living with the disease reside in Brooklyn's East New York neighborhood.
