A Coast Guard member from Long Beach was arrested after police found illegal weaponry at his home, according to investigators.
Nassau police said they arrested Justin Taylor after someone at the Coast Guard base reported that they were worried about his behavior. They said they searched his home and found three pieces of illegal weaponry, including a Windham Weaponry WW-15 MPC 5.56mm M4A4 Rifle modified with a hand grip that is banned in New York. He also had two high-capacity magazines, police said.
"I'm not sure if the member worried for his well-being or with their own well-being," said Petty Officer Steve Strohmaier, a Coast Guard spokesman.
Strohmaier described Taylor as a full-time member of the Coast Guard for several years who had the rank of seaman apprentice, which he noted "is a very low rank."
He also said that the Coast Guard inventories its own armories every morning and night, accounting for every weapon and bullet, and the weapons and ammunition found at Taylor's home were not Coast Guard issued or owned.
Police said Taylor told them he bought the gun last year at South Shore Sportsman and later added the second grip.
Taylor is charged with three counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
The Coast Guard says Taylor is still considered an active service member but is not allowed at the Jones Beach station, pending the outcome of the investigation.
