Drivers who own cars that have persistent problems may be entitled to money back or even a replacement vehicle.
The New Jersey Lemon Law will help driers who have vehicles that seem to constantly have issues.
“It could be anything, could be the transmission, could be water leaks…if something is wrong with your car, you need to get it into service as quickly as possible,” says Kimmel & Silverman automotive consumer advocate Mike Sacks.
Lemon Laws may vary from state to state. In New Jersey, the law covers vehicles for two years or 24,000 miles. It applies after three failed repairs of the same defect or one failed repair of a serious defect. It also applies if the vehicle is kept off the road for a total of 20 days.
“It doesn't even have to be consecutive, just has to be within the parameters of the law,” Sacks says. “For any one reason, you could have a potential lemon.”
Sacks says that it is important to keep any invoices for service done to the vehicle.
A driver who files a Lemon Law claim and wins may be able to get the car company to buy back the vehicle or give credit toward a new one. The driver could also be able to get cash compensation.
Information about the Lemon Law can be found at the New Jersey Department of Consumer Affairs website.
