A popular after-school program in Bed-Stuy is in jeopardy if the Department of Education decides to make way for a charter school.
Pathways for Graduation is a second chance at high school for many students. That's were students take part in an after-school bike program where they learn how to repair old bikes.
Teacher Nicole Greaves says the program is a lifesaver for students who have fallen through the cracks. She says it's a vital resource in the community.
Students like Tamba Simproa say the program has helped them a lot.
"It's really been a successful program for me because they really teach us how to fix bikes and be a mechanic," says Simproa. "That way we can make money out of it and at the same time we can find jobs easily."
However, the Department of Education is looking to make way for a charter school at the Marcy Avenue location. The bike program uses four different classrooms in the building. The building also houses four schools and a day care.
Greaves says if the Brooklyn East Collegiate Charter School moves into the building in the fall, the bike program students would have to share one school floor with hundreds of other students.
The Panel for Educational Policy is set to vote on the relocation proposal next week.
