Hundreds of people took part in the Walk MS national movement in Fairfield Saturday.

Events like Walk MS fundraise to raise awareness, support research for treatments and a cure.

Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease that disrupts the flow of information between the brain and the body.

Many of the walkers said that they've had a family member, friend, or themselves affected by multiple sclerosis. 

Organizers tell News 12 that there were no treatments for MS just 25 years ago. Through research funded by events like Walk MS, there are now 16 treatments that slow the progression of the disease.

Over 800 people participated in the walk that started at Jennings Beach, and over 8,000 people were expected to walk at marches across the state.

Organizers say they’re hoping to beat what they raised last year and raise over $1.27 million.
