A group of Bronx teenagers received free prom attire from a local organization Saturday.
Isabel’s Empowering Queens hosted its annual prom drive. Organizers say that it gives underprivileged kids the chance to make their dreams of a glitzy prom a reality.
Now in its fourth year, the organization now offers jackets for the guys and dresses for younger girls going to their eighth-grade dances.
Amy Malave, founder of Isabel’s Empowering Queens, tells News 12 that she came up with the idea while working at an all-girls school. Malave asked students about their plans for prom, but she discovered that some couldn't afford to attend.
"So, I started giving them things from my closet to help them out with their prom things," she said.
The organization begins to collect dress in January and hosts the drives during prom season.
The next prom drive will be next Saturday at the Harvest Fields Community Church from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
