A Bronx neighborhood is trying to put the brakes on potential plans to open a new jail in the area as Rikers Island gets ready to shut down.
City leaders, students and residents came together Thursday to protest the proposed jail site on East 161st Street in Concourse Village.
The new jail sites are part of the de Blasio administration's plan to shut down Rikers Island and build smaller detention facilities in all boroughs except for Staten Island.
Although not officially announced, City Councilwoman Vanessa Gibson says the proposed detention site adjacent to the Bronx Hall of Justice is being looked at after mounting protests grew over the original location in Mott Haven. Gibson says this site is not suitable either.
Residents say that a 1,500-bed detention center would only add to an already congested area. They also point to three schools and a library that would be in close proximity to the proposed jail site.
Protesters say a detention center as a backdrop only hurts the neighborhood.
