Bronx teacher receives 2018 Big Apple Award

MORRIS HEIGHTS -

A Morris Heights teacher was presented with the 2018 Big Apple Award for his outstanding work.

Damen Davis is a sixth-grade English language arts teacher at IS 303 in Morris Heights. Davis is one of only 17 teachers citywide to receive the honor from among the more than 6,000 applicants.

"I was really surprised," says Davis. "I was really taken back."

Davis lets his kids start class each day with a breathing exercise. Then he works hard to keep them engaged.

One student says Davis is a nurturing teacher who is always there for those who need help. Other students say he makes class fun and always makes sure everyone is learning.

Davis also takes his job beyond the classroom by visiting parents who have a child that's falling behind. He says dedication translates into students' confidence.
