The FDA has approved a first of its kind shot to prevent chronic migraines.
Aimovig aims to reduce the number of migraines people get.
“It's revolutionary,” says Dr. Robert Duarte at Northwell Health.
Duarte says the drug should treat the underlying cause of migraines without any major side effects.
It would be a monthly injection, and patients won't necessarily need a physician to give it to them. Duarte says that patients should be able to get the prescription first from their doctor and learn how to give the injection. But after that, patients should be able to do it on their own.
But not everyone is convinced that is a good idea.
“That sounds a little dangerous to me,” says Peter Demeo, who works at an urgent care and says he has a lot of questions. “Wondering what the side effects will be, how well it actually works.”
Duarte says he believes the drug technically is available today but that it may take a little while before migraine sufferers get it.
