The South Bronx community came together Wednesday to honor a prestigious doctor in its neighborhood.

The corner of Westchester Avenue and Southern Boulevard was co-named for Dr. Richard Izquierdo.

Izquierdo has been a vital part of the area since the early 1960s, when he opened his first practice on Southern Boulevard. Izquierdo served as the 41st Precinct Community Council chairman for 14 years. He was awarded the Surgeon General’s Medallion in 2007
