The Long Beach School District is doing away with traditional homework for its elementary students.
Starting in September, kids will be asked to wonder, read and play.
Administrators cite research that found homework does not have a positive effect on the elementary level.
The Long Beach School district sent a letter home to parents saying, "Homework does have a positive effect on achievement in middle school and high school, but not in the elementary grades. What does help elementary students is to read at home, but many students are sacrificing reading time because they're too tired by the time they finish their homework."
The district says next school year that more breaks will also be added to the schedule for students to play.
