Bronx residents are working hard to liven up the Genesis Park Community Garden.

Volunteers helped to remove garbage from the Morrisania garden as they learned more about its history and the importance of permaculture.

"Permaculture is a system of design and it's ethically-based," said ‘Bicycle Joe’ Tomasello, coordinator of the event. "It brings the best of many different disciplines of design."

He says the ethics of the project involve care of the earth, care of the people and the returning of the abundance to the earth and the people.

The effects of Hurricane Sandy mixed with the demolition of a neighboring church were reasons why the garden was in need of a restoration.

Those visiting the area like the idea of restoring the community garden.

"We don't have community gardens so normally the people live in their house or their own apartment and make their own garden," said Brazilian tourist and gardening enthusiast Rafael Althoff. "The idea of a community is so cool."
