Democratic candidates call for elimination of ICE at political rally
A pair of political hopefuls held a rally Sunday to call for the abolishment of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The recent detainment of pizza deliveryman Pablo Villavicencio in Brooklyn was a major talking point at the event. Villavicencio will be allowed to stay in the United States for now after he was detained while delivering food to an Army base.
Congressional candidate for the 14th district Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and State Senate candidate in Brooklyn Julia Salazar are now campaigning to abolish ICE altogether.
"This is an institution that's literally been around since 2003," said Alexandra Rojas of Justice Democrats. "We've lived without it, we can go back again," Salazar says. "We don't need a brute squad to pick up people and be above the law when we already have a due process system in place."
Both candidates have been endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America and Justice Democrats. Both organizations have been rallying on Villavicencio’s behalf.
