Cuomo visits LI to push for 'red flag' gun law

Gov. Andrew Cuomo kicked off a statewide tour with a stop on Long Island Monday to push for a measure that's aimed at making schools safer.

The red flag bill would give educators and parents the ability to petition judges to order a mental health examination of a troubled young person before they hurt themselves or others. The bill also would give judges the power to restrict that young person's access to guns or remove them all together.

Some students who spoke with News 12 expressed support for the red flag bill, while others weren't sure about it.

The bill has support in the state Assembly, but is facing an uphill battle in the Senate. Cuomo says the Senate must act before there's another school shooting.

"Unlike a lot of legislation we've passed, this will save lives," Cuomo says. "I am convinced of it."

Gun dealer Andy Chernoff says mental health evaluations are important, but says he doesn't like that Cuomo's bill is focusing on removing guns from people's homes.

"Don't take your own political agenda and mix it up into it in an anti-gun way and specifically target firearms," Chernoff says.

The governor also visited a high school in the Bronx to drum up support for the bill.
