New York may be closer to legalizing marijuana after receiving an endorsement in a recent state health department report.
The report released Monday outlines a thorough review of the legal, medical and social implications of marijuana.
The schedule 1 drug was not always illegal in the United States and was sold in extract forms at pharmacies in the late 1800s.
However, marijuana was banned in the U.S. in 1937 after it became popular for recreational use.
Marijuana was deemed a schedule 1 drug in 1970 by President Richard Nixon.
Legal marijuana has helped bring tax revenue to 29 states in the U.S.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has expressed support for the legalization of marijuana.
