Prior to Wednesday, there were only 10 reported shark attacks over the past 100 years of recorded history in all New York waters, experts say.
Greg Metzger, a marine biologist from Southampton College, says the increased sightings have to do with its food source, bunker, swimming close to the shoreline.
He says increases in bunker over the last few years have naturally increased the number of predators. Metzger also says humans are a “terrible food source for [sharks,] and they know that.”
Experts say swimmers should get out of the water if they see schools of fish or birds swirling above them.
