Health officials say it's only a matter of time before the longhorned tick makes its way to Long Island.
Dr. Paul Pipia, of Nassau University Medical Center, says the new species has been found in New Jersey and upstate New York.
He says tick bites in humans can cause severe illness and prolonged health damage, including cognitive damage.
Ticks are usually found in wooded and grassy areas. Anyone planning activities in those areas is urged to protect themselves by wearing long pants and long sleeves.
Other tick bite prevention tips include:
- Tucking in shirts and pants
- Using insect repellents containing DEET
- Performing tick checks after outdoor activities
Anyone who suspects they have been bitten by a tick should contact a health care provider immediately.
