The Darien Health Department says the town is using new technology that it believes can be an important way to reduce sunburn and the risk of skin cancer.

Darien is the first town in the state to get a meter that measures exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays from Hamden-based Solaware Technologies. It's part of a summer pilot program in the state.

The health department says there are meters at Pear Tree Point and Weed beaches.

Solaware Technologies says other towns, including Milford, are starting to get the meters.
