Greens Farms Academy’s summer program pays off at graduation time

The Greens Farms Academy in Westport invites underprivileged Bridgeport students for a six-week summer camp program and 11 weeks of Saturday sessions throughout the school year to help bolster their educations.
"Horizons at GFA is a full-year program for students pre-K through college," according to the school.
But it's the six-week summer camp that directly combats the so-called summer slide, when students normally would go months without doing any school-related activities.
And the approach seems to be paying off with a 98 percent graduation rate compared to just 66.5 percent across Bridgeport as a whole.
Staff members say they have a student-teacher ratio that public schools can't match.
That gives each individual student more one-on-one time with educators, who can better meet their unique needs.
