Rep. Rosa DeLauro is pushing for a stay of deportation for a New Haven mom after 42,000 people signed a petition urging authorities to let her remain in the United States.
Salma Sikander lives in New Haven with her family — but immigration authorities told her in June that she'd have to leave them behind and return to her native Bangladesh by this Thursday.
"The Trump administration has lost sight of what makes America great," DeLauro said Tuesday, standing alongside Sikander and her family. "The opportunity to give your family a better life."
The woman has lived in the U.S. for 20 years and had received a deportation reprieve in 2011.
"(In) two days my mom could disappear," said Samir Mahmud, Sikander's son. "And that's never happened before."
Sikander declined to speak on camera, saying the ordeal is too emotional for her.
"I'll fight until my last breath to keep my wife with me," said Anwar Mahmud, her husband. "Nineteen years she's been with me. She's a wonderful woman. I'm proud to say I'm Salma's husband."
The family says lawyers are hoping to have her stay granted before Thursday's deadline.
