Town hall weighs options for BQE construction

Hundreds turned out for a town hall meeting on the future of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway Thursday night.
City officials are weighing two options for the BQE -- the first being a traditional lane-by-lane approach to update the crumbling highway. Officials say that approach would take longer and potentially cost more.
The other plan has stirred up some controversy. The proposal would entail temporarily sacrificing the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, and turning it into a six-lane highway while both levels of the BQE are renovated at the same time.
The second proposal has riled up some, with people passing out flyers urging others to preserve the promenade. When the proposal was announced at the meeting, a chorus of boos could be heard.
The DOT says it is still early in a two-year public dialogue before making their decision.
