Essex County authorities have identified the man killed in a police-involved shooting in Newark Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as 29-year-old Newark resident Paul Braswell.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office says that Braswell and another person were the subjects of a law enforcement investigation into gun offenses.
Officials say that members of the task force attempted to arrest Braswell and his friend during a traffic stop. But during the traffic stop, the two men attempted to flee the area in their car. Officials say that the officers fired their guns at the men as they fled.
Police say that the other man was arrested at the scene, but that Braswell remained inside the car. Police tried to get Braswell to exit the car for 45 minutes. A robot was sent to check out the car, and that’s when police discovered that he was dead.
Officials say the men were in possession of three firearms, which were recovered at the scene.
Ballistics tests will be performed to figure out which weapons killed Braswell.
The other man has not yet been charged. He is in the hospital in stable condition.
