The Port Authority has renewed its agreement with the Red Hook Container Terminal, granting it an additional five years of maritime activity.

Around 150 people work to load and unload goods to prepare them for distribution every day at the port, which exchanges 60,000 containers a year.

The port brings in international goods like plantains, pineapples, frozen fish and other commodities which then get distributed into the city and the surrounding region.

The president of the Red Hook Container Terminal says one of its biggest missions is to increase the movement of goods by water in hopes to cut down on truck distribution, which brings traffic and pollution.

The terminal is one of two ports located in New York City, with the other located in Staten Island.

Red Hook Container Terminal is also planning on reopening the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal as an additional port to help exchange goods by water.
