The Hempstead Town supervisor is hoping for some give and take when it comes to the budget.
Lauren Gillen says she is willing to reduce spending from her proposed budget. However, she says Republicans must abandon their plan to estimate the number of employees who might retire next year.
"You can't anticipate savings that you can't guarantee you will achieve," says Gillen.
Majority Leader Erin King-Sweeney called Gillen's offer an important first step and says both parties are willing to advance budget talks.
Gillen is hoping to reach a budget compromise by Oct. 30.
