There has been an increase in gun violence this year within the 40th Precinct compared to last year, according to NYPD crime statistics.
To date, there have been 32 shootings within the 40th Precinct, which covers the Bronx neighborhoods of Mott Haven, Melrose and Port Morris.
Inspector Brian Hennessy attributes the recent rise in gun violence to club and gang-related shootings and personal disputes, as well as robberies and narcotics-related shootings in the district.
On Wednesday, there was a visible police presence on the block where an off-duty officer was caught in the crossfire early Tuesday morning at 456 East 137th St. The injured officer was grazed in the shoulder area. A $12,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the suspects in that shooting.
Community members say more patrols are needed, especially during the early morning hours.
