A group of students commemorated the nearly 100 Jewish people who died at the start of the Holocaust back in 1938 Nazi Germany.

A candlelight vigil was held to remember the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht – also known as the “Night of Broken Glass.”

The vigil was even more somber as the Manhattan College students read the names of the 11 lives lost in the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting almost two weeks ago.

The “Night of Broken Glass” is known to many as a turning point during the Holocaust. It’s a day when Jewish businesses, schools and synagogues were destroyed and persecution of the Jewish people changed from being social and economical to physical – with beatings and murder.

The students gathered for the vigil at the college’s Holocaust and Genocide Interfaith Center. It included a lecture on anti-Semitism and hate.
