The 34th annual Bronx Veterans Day parade brought dozens of community members out of their homes to honor the nation's veterans Sunday.

The parade finished at Bicentennial Veterans Memorial Park in Throggs Neck, where local officials honored the grand marshal, veteran Robert Doonan.

Doonan was a U.S. Army captain who piloted helicopters during the Vietnam war.

U.S. Marines, both active and retired, honored their Army counterpart during a cake-cutting ceremony while celebrating the Marine Corp's 243rd birthday at the Bronxonia Yacht Club after the parade.

The United Veterans Parade Committee of Greater New York, which organized the event, says it is continuing its goal of engaging young people in Veterans Day services.

Organizers also shed light on veteran suicides, with a procession of 22 flags at the start of the parade to symbolize the roughly 22 service members who take their lives each day.
