The Long Island Rail Road expects to raise fares in March and it all comes as they say it's losing $20 million a year in unpaid fares.

The figure was announced Monday by the railroad.

According to the LIRR, crowded trains make it nearly impossible for fare collectors to check all tickets.

The transit authority is facing a $1 billion budget deficit by 2020 and are proposing a 4 percent fare hike that's supposed to start in March

Commuters say they are skeptical of the new figures.

Railroad officials say they believe new payment systems will help solve the fare evasion and the uncollected fare wouldn't fill the entire budget gap.
