Police say an 81-year-old woman was bilked out of $45,000 by a scammer who claimed her son was arrested.
Police say the suspect showed up to the victim's Oceanside home three times, demanding money he claimed was needed to bail her son out of jail. Each time the woman withdrew money from the bank. She gave the man $7,500 on each of the first two occasions.
Police say the scammer showed up a third time demanding $30,000, saying the woman's son injured a pregnant woman in an accident and that she needed to pay for the medical bills.
In surveillance video taken from a Ring doorbell, the victim can be heard apologizing to the man, saying the money is slippery. She even asks him if he needs a sponge to count the cash.
Police say the man left the home in a dark-colored Ford Fusion. They ask anyone with information to call Nassau Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
