The deadline to sign up for health insurance under former President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act is less than two weeks away.

Anyone going through the federal health care exchange has a deadline of Dec. 15.

It's no secret that President Donald Trump is opposed to "Obamacare," but critics claim his cuts to outreach will drastically decrease enrollment, which could increase premiums.

There's also a shorter enrollment period that went into effect last year. New this year is no penalty for choosing not to have coverage. The Trump administration got rid of the individual mandate.

New York has its own, state-run health plan marketplace. That deadline for sign-up is Jan. 31.

The penalty for an adult with no insurance is $695. Anyone who is uninsured for 2018 would be required to pay the penalty when they file their taxes in early 2019, unless they're eligible for an exemption.
