Suffolk requiring amusement parks to report criminal complaints

Suffolk County will be requiring amusement parks to report criminal complaints following claims that children were groped at Splish Splash Water Park earlier this year.
Four 11-year-old girls were on a YMCA field trip at Splish Splash in August. Parents of the girls say they were groped by a group of men while they were in the wave pool. They say security was notified, but police were not. The men were escorted off of the property.
A mother named "Melissa," who asked News 12 to conceal her identity, says the incident has taken a toll on her 11-year-old daughter. She says she reached out to anyone she could think of for help, including Suffolk legislators Susan Berland and DuWayne Gregory.
"It's heart-wrenching, and so that's what really spurred us into action," Gregory says. "It's important that we protect our young people."
Suffolk lawmakers unanimously passed legislation Tuesday that would require amusement parks and water parks to now immediately contact police when any criminal complaints are made.
Melissa says her daughter was in tears when she told her the news: "She says, 'Mom, I thought they just didn't care and they forgot about us.'"
Failure to make the report to police would result in a $5,000 fine the first time.
The legislation now goes to the county executive for approval.
News 12 did not immediately hear back from Splish Splash for comment.
