A robbery and attempted home invasion has completely changed the complexion of the Throgs Neck neighborhood for a man and his family.
Jose Torres pulled into his driveway at the corner of Calhoun and Randall avenues on Nov. 29 when he says two men, one armed with a gun, robbed him.
Torres says they ran off with his backpack that contained about $13,000 worth of jewelry from his job.
After Torres was robbed, he changed the locks on his home and installed surveillance cameras. Soon after that, cameras captured a man attempting to get into his home using his keys.
Torres says he cannot tell if the man caught on camera is one of the two who police say robbed him, but he does recognized the car alarm on the keys the man was trying to use.
"The robbery wasn't even scary. Imagine I wasn't home and my son was home from school alone with this guy trying to get in. Who knows what would've happened," says Torres.
Police are investigating the incidents.
Torres says his family has lived on the corner of Calhoun and Randall for 15 years and didn’t any problems with crime before. The incidents have left Torres with a new view of the neighborhood.
"Until the cops tell me they arrested him, we can't rest easy," says Torres. "My wife hasn't been to work, I haven't been to work ... he's still out there, we don't know what's going on."
The events have even pushed him to say he is considering moving away from the area entirely.
